Marine Electronic Systems Series

We are gauging interest in the USPS electrical elective sequence, starting with Marine Electrical Systems and progressing on to Marine Communications Systems and Electronic Navigation. We would like to start this sequence this winter or spring. The USPS Education Department strongly recommends taking Electrical Systems as a pre-requisite for taking either Communications Systems or Electronic Navigation, as a familiarity with basic electrical theory and onboard electrical power systems is fundamental to both of the latter courses. However, if you took Electrical Engineering 101 in college, or have a strong understanding of the basics of electricity, I would be willing for you to sit in on class sessions of your choosing and take the final exam of Electrical Systems, and then go on to one or both of the others.

The cost of course materials for Electrical Systems and Communication Systems will be about $50, and about $60 for Electronic Navigation, depending on the number of students in each course. Contact our Squadron Education Officer for more information.

Piloting

is the first of a two-part program of study of inland and coastal navigation and is the follow-on Advanced Grade course after Seamanship. The focus is on the fundamentals of basic piloting “ keeping track of your movements on the water, determining where you are at any given moment, and laying out a course to your planned destination. Included are a thorough study of charts and their use, aids to navigation, mariner's compass, variation and deviation, bearings, dead reckoning, and developing skill at plotting and labeling.  Ten class sessions, plus closed book exam and open book exam, are planned. If you are seriously interested in this course, by all means let me know.

Any member of Music City Power Squadron, both those who have recently completed Seamanship and anyone who has completed Seamanship in prior years, is welcome. Contact our Squadron Education Officer for more information.
