Fourth Annual Fall Cumberland Cruise a Success
Share
clear
On Sunday 11 November ten souls from Music City's Squadron boarded Blue Heron for a leisurely and scenic cruise from Ashland City to Sycamore Creek. It was a beautiful day, sunny with mid-seventies temperature and enough breeze to make docking interesting.
Captain Jim Steele took us downstream past Cumberland Island to Chapmansboro, where we were able to see the remarkable degree to which that little community has rebuilt itself after the May 2010 flood. We cruised on upstream under the old Illinois Central bridge, now part of the Cumberland Trail greenway, past scenic bluffs, tranquil pastures and limpid pools, almost to the Highway 12 bridge. Dozens of herons noisily greeted us along the way, while a few sliders took advantage of the warm sunshine to rest on a log.
Three hours after embarkation, and after an interesting experiment in quantum steering under the Highway 49 bridge, we dropped the gangplank at Riverbluff Park. Eight of us then gathered at the Riverview Restaurant on the other side of the river for a delightful dinner and our November General Membership Meeting.
