Cabaret: District 17 Fall Conference in Atlanta
This year's USPS District 17 Fall Conference, hosted by Atlanta 19-21 October, was memorable for two reasons. Not only were there a record number of seminars available to attend at the Saturday breakout sessions, but also the entertainment at Friday's dinner was outstanding.
The evening's theme was "Cabaret", and the Atlanta Squadron pulled out all the stops. With program directed and choreographed by P/C Lisa Herndon, no less than twelve of Atlanta's most talented (or at least, less shy) members sang numbers from many Broadway hits, including the title piece. In the audience from Music City were John and Jana Malatak, Candyce and David Corcoran, and Tom Hudson.

On Saturday afternoon, we could choose to attend the USPS seminars "Mariner's Compass", "VHF/DSC Marine Radio" and "Rules of the Road", led by Jack Cook, Tom Hamilton and Eric Ringwall respectively. Or we could also sit in on "Gourmet Cruising Fare Without a Galley" (Cindy Ringwall), "Social Networking" (Maria Hendrix), "Curiosity - The Mars Rover" (Mike Guler), "BOC - A Commander's Perspective" (Mitch Meredith), "Do It Yourself - Online Courses and Seminars" (Eric Ringwall), "Electric Propulsion - The Future of Boating?" (Tom Hudson), and "Instructor Development - Recertification" (John Miller).

At the Conference, Knoxville Power Squadron announced that the Watts Bar Invitational will again be held at the Terrace View Resort and Marina, likely on the third or fourth weekend in June, and the Atlanta Squadron will again organize the Atlanta Challenge Cardboard Boat Race.

The D17 Spring Conference will be in Oak Ridge, at a date yet to be announced. At only a little over two hours from Nashville, let's turn out for this one
